Overview

Welcome to the ‘Housing People, Housing Communities’ Conference, proudly hosted by the Australasian Housing Institute. The past 12 months have been a period of momentous change in national housing policy in both New Zealand and Australia. As this is the Institute’s first major national housing conference in New Zealand, the program takes a step back to offer a sweeping view of the major social housing issues of our time. The Conference presents a special opportunity for New Zealand housing professionals to engage with their domestic and international colleagues on such pressing topics as the impact of the global financial crisis and the future role of community housing.

Other issues up for debate include homelessness, transforming social housing estates, integrated service delivery and innovative approaches to social housing. We have also organised a special session on building a global housing community. Bolstering the discussion will be a number of leading housing thinkers, including Howard Farrand and Michael Lennon, as well as New Zealand’s very own Minister Phil Heatley and Lesley McTurk. The Conference will be followed by the 2009 Professional Excellence in Social Housing Awards dinner presentation. These awards celebrate the contribution social housing people make in improving people’s lives and building strong communities by:

  • rewarding great work and achievements by individuals and teams
  • recognising best practice and high standards of service
  • promoting and celebrating innovation
  • developing and increasing the profile of our profession.

I invite you to come along for an opportunity to meet and congratulate the nominees and winners. The Australasian Housing Institute is the professional association for housing professionals in New Zealand and Australia. Our purpose is to support housing people achieve excellence in their work and the best possible outcomes for their clients and organisations. I thank you for joining us in an exciting day– for taking the time to share your insights, ideas and knowledge with fellow housing professionals – and wish everyone a stimulating and productive time.

Joan Ferguson
CEO, Australasian Housing Institute
