Social Housing Policy Development

The Role of the AHI

One of the most important roles of the Australian Housing Institute is to develop policy about important housing issues that affect its members.

The AHI launched it's first Policy Bulletin: National Affordable Housing Policy (pdf) in September 2006. The purpose of this policy bulletin is to brief AHI members on national policy developments in affordable housing.

This is the first of an ongoing series of policy bulletins from the AHI and form part of an increased focus by the AHI on policy issues. A key aspect of our policy role is to inform our members about topical policy issues to assist them in their work and capacity to participate in policy discussions.

The Policy Committee

The Policy Committee is a sub-committee of the Board of the AHI. Terms of reference have been set up to govern the Committee.

The Committee's main responsibility is to help the organisation formulate policy in consultation with its members. This consultation will take place either directly through head office or through branches. Members will be asked to contribute to discussion and debate, offer contributions to journals and publications and respond to papers developed on behalf of the Institute.

The Policy Committee will recommend policy positions to the Board of Directors who have the final say on formal adoption of policy for the Institute.

The Policy Committee has responsibility for two additional areas of the AHI's work:

  • Overseeing the production of the AHI journal Housing WORKS
  • Participating in the selection of papers, via the steering committee for the
    National Housing Conference

Membership of the Policy Committee

The members of the Policy Committee are not all Directors of the AHI. The Committee can co-opt anyone who is a member of the Institute to assist it in its work. This means that members who have a particular interest in policy development can be involved. The Policy Committee can also set up working parties to consider specific issues.

Current members of the Policy Committee are:

Name Position

Ms Rhonda Phillips Committee Chair
Ms Robin Zakharov PSM
Ms Carol Croce
Ms Lynden Esdaile
Mr William Roden
Judith Le Harivel
Ms Jane Fletcher
Mr Garry Williams

The Executive Director of the Institute provides support to the Committee.
