Professional Recognition Scheme for Housing Professionals

The Professional Recognition Scheme (PRS) is the new ‘gold standard’ for housing professionals in New Zealand and Australia.

The Professional Recognition Scheme was established and is governed by the Australasian Housing Institute, the professional association for social housing.

The Professional Recognition Scheme comprises the Certificate of Housing Practice (CHP), a Continuing Professional Development Program (CPDP) and a Certificate in Social Housing Management (to be introduced in July 2011). The Professional Recognition Scheme is underpinned by the AHI’s Skills and Knowledge Framework (SKF).

How PRS recognises your professionalism and advances your career

The Professional Recognition Scheme acknowledges and sets standards for professionalism in social housing practice.

The Scheme gives housing professionals the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and ethical practice and their ongoing commitment to continuous improvement through an independent, industry based program.

Professional recognition will benefit you by marking your quality practice, improving your employment opportunities, enhancing your career transitions and supporting your ethical practice.

Partnerships across agencies are critically important in the social housing industry and certification tells your peers and other professionals they can trust in your professional standing.

The Scheme clearly articulates what it means to be a housing professional in 2011 and beyond and will help to unify our profession.

Housing people are rightly proud of our work to improve housing outcomes for individuals and communities. PRC will encourage others to see housing as a worthwhile career.

Advantages of PRS for housing organisations

Housing organisations promoting the AHI’s Professional Recognition Scheme will see significant benefits.

Organisations can enhance their reputation as practice leaders when they help their staff reach and maintain high standards through the Professional Recognition Scheme.

Competition between employers for knowledgeable, skilled and ethical housing managers is predicted to increase in coming years, as a wide range of human service organisations look for people with similar skillsets. The Professional Recognition Scheme provides the opportunity for employers to develop people and support their housing careers within an industrywide framework.

Consumers, the community at large and other stakeholders value the knowledge and skills demonstrated by the people working in housing organisations. The Professional Recognition Scheme is a way for housing organisations to market their service excellence.

Employers can be assured that those who are awarded professional recognition have undertaken a rigorous and independent program. Similar schemes in other industries suggest that those who subscribe to professionalism and submit themselves to a rigorous process can be trusted to produce high quality work.

Housing organisations play an important role in the local economy, creating jobs in construction and maintenance. Our investment decisions have an impact on local schools, shops and businesses.

The work we do is fundamental to people’s lives, so it is important that all our consumers and stakeholders trust us as a profession. The rigorous and independent assessment process of the Professional Recognition Scheme can give stakeholders confidence in the people delivering and contracting services in their community.

Professional recognition feeds professional practice. Housing organisations want to deliver high quality, value for money services and products. The Professional Recognition Scheme is an important element in organisations setting high standards and meeting them.
