Professional Recognition Scheme

Types of Recognition

The AHI offers two forms of professional recognition

  1. Certificate of Housing Practice (available from January 2011)
    The Certificate of Housing Practice designates a housing professional with broad industry experience and expertise across a range of specialisations.
  2. Certificate of Practice in Social Housing Management (available in July 2011).
    Certificates in other areas of specialisation will be intr duced over time. These will include Community Renewal, Asset Management, Housing Policy, Housing Development, Housing Support, Housing Finance and Housing Planning.
    The Certificate of Practice in an area of specialisation denotes a housing professional, whose experience and expertise is focused on a single area such as housing management.

    Routes to recognition

    The AHI offers four routes to recognition

    1. Qualifications
    2. Experience
    3. Invitation to distinguished housing professionals
    4. Membership of designated professional associations

    Qualifications

    Recognition is offered to housing professionals who have been awarded a qualification recognised by the Australasian Housing Institute.

    The AHI currently recognises the following courses as the qualifications required to obtain a Certificate of Housing Practice

    • N079 Graduate Certificate of Social Science (Housing Management and Policy) Swinburne University
    • N0807 Graduate Diploma of Social Science (Housing Management and Policy) Swinburne University

    Experience

    Recognition through the experience route will be available to housing professionals in July 2011. This route comprises:

    • written evidence that the candidate meets the competence standards as described in the AHI’s competency framework;
    • structured feedback from colleagues;
    • evidence of continuing professional development;
    • an interview, if required.

    Invitation to distinguished housing professionals

    Recognition through this route is by invitation only from the AHI’s Board of Directors.

    Membership of designated professional associations

    Recognition through this route will be available in September 2011.

    Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

    The people, communities and organisations we serve expect skilled and competent housing practitioners. CPD is the means by which housing professionals commit to keeping their skills and knowledge up to date to improve their professional practice.

    Housing professionals are required to undertake 40 hours of professional development over each two year period.

    Membership of the AHI

    Only members of the AHI are eligible to apply for professional recognition.

    Application for recognition

    Housing professionals may lodge their application for professional recognition on-line and at any time of the year.

    Awarding recognition

    The Certificate of Housing Practice will be awarded twice a year in May and in November.

    Fees

    Free for Swinburne graduates until 30th April 2011.

    Renewal

    The Certificate of Housing Practice is renewed every two years. Participating housing professionals must complete the Continuing Pro-fessional Development Program to be awarded a Certificate.
