Working with Complex and Demanding Clients Workshop - Hamilton, March 2020
The Australasian Housing Institute will be delivering a service delivery workshop, Working with Complex and Demanding Clients, in Hamilton on Friday, 6 March 2019.
This one-day workshop aims to assist people in delivering quality client services to those whose situations are complex and whose behaviour is, at times, demanding and challenging. It will enable staff to develop strategies and communication skills to work more effectively in such client situations.
- assessment of complex situations
- introduction of de-fusing and de-escalation skills
- use of assertiveness skills
- sharing local knowledge of appropriate agencies for additional expertise and referral
Workshop participants will explore the critical issues of working more effectively with complex and demanding clients. They will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of, and practical use of, strategies and intervention techniques that may be of use to them in such work situations.
While the workshop may not be able to address each specific concern that all trainees may have or provide ideal solutions for each and every situation, the goal is to share an array of strategies and ideas that may be helpful to the worker.

Presenter: John Flanagan
John is a mental health accredited Social Worker in private practice, completing his Bachelor of Social Work in 1988 and later a Masters in Gestalt Therapy. John has had an extensive history in direct service delivery with couples, families and young people, as well as in organisational development and training. He has developed a practice that utilises a range of experiential therapies combining these approaches in his work style. John has also completed his Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment and has delivered a broad range of training both accredited and non-accredited.
He has also provided training to many human service organisations in Australia and New Zealand on creating positive work cultures, managing challenging clients, resilience and communication. Over the last fifteen years John has provided a range of psycho-educational group programs to Australian Veterans and their families in areas such as trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and resilience.
